Youth Jazz Summer Intensive &
Culminating Concert Highlights
From August 6-10, 2025, LA Jazz Festival Foundation welcomed the inaugural cohort of our Summer Youth Program. This phenomenal group of high school musicians hailed from Los Angeles, Pasadena, Altadena, and New Orleans, and brought with them not just their talent for jazz music, but a reflection that the mission of the LA Jazz Festival Foundation is coming true.
Program Highlights
-
Each day, students participated in sectionals and full ensemble rehearsals led by acclaimed instructors from Berklee College of Music, CalArts, and other leading institutions. Throughout the week, they prepared nine iconic jazz selections, building both their technical skills and collaborative artistry in anticipation of the final concert.

Students participated in masterclasses with world-renowned artists, including:
-
John Clayton – Grammy-winning bassist, composer, and educator, who shared wisdom on musicianship and mentorship.
-
Tony Nicholas – son of the legendary Nicholas Brothers, who gave insight into jazz history and the artistry of tap dance.
-
Irvin Mayfield – New Orleans trumpeter and cultural ambassador, who spoke about jazz as a tool for community and storytelling.

A visit to iHeartRadio Los Angeles, where students toured the studios and learned about the broadcasting industry.

A day at the Musicians Institute, which included a program lecture, video presentation, tours of studios, practice rooms, classrooms, and library, a jam session, and goodie bags for each student.
-
-
Students enjoyed daily lunches generously sponsored by community partners, including City Catering and BBQ, Raising Cane’s, and Chick-fil-A.
-
The week culminated in a student showcase concert on August 10, where families, community members, and supporters celebrated the students’ growth and achievements.
-
At the concert, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Heather Hutt presented each student with an official Certificate of Recognition, honoring their participation and dedication.
